Upcoming Class:  January 6, 2018, 9:00 am (Saturdays)

Course Description:  The exercises covered in this puppy training class have been carefully selected to teach life skills.  Our goal is to teach you obedience skills in a way that makes it easy for you to apply them in everyday life.  For example, the basic obedience signal “Sit” is most useful when applied in conditions such as: entering or exiting doorways, waiting politely when you are having a conversation with someone you encounter on your walk, waiting in a sit while you attend to the door, etc.

Pre-K9 I will:

  • involve the whole family
  • teach puppies to be reliable off leash, so they will need to wear the leash less often as adults
  • integrate play into learning (we strongly encourage the optional skill-building sessions to support this integration)
  • teach both handler and puppy the rules of polite play, which teaches bite inhibition, respect of boundaries, self-control, and other valuable life skills

Our courses are unique in that we understand puppy development and how fast they learn with or without our influence.  In this course, we work very hard in shaping your behavior so that you can influence your dog’s behavior.  You will be surprised at how much we cover and how much you will take away from this course; most importantly it will reflect in your dog’s independent decision making process.

dogs and trainers posingIn short, we will teach:

  • Sit and Down with a built in Stay
  • Release
  • “Step up” and other platform exercises
  • “Around” obstacles
  • Loose Leash Walking- using your body cues to move in the different directions indicated by your shift in position (left and right), and “auto sit” when you come to a stop. We spend a considerable time building fluency in this exercise so that your puppy is able to respond according to different speeds as well.
  • Distance, Duration and Distraction – all the above exercises are built on in consecutive weeks, with introduction to real life applications that may involve increased levels of distance, duration and distraction.

We break down each exercise into sections, and take brief breaks between sections.  During these intervals we incorporate play between handler and dog, building confidence, exuberance, excitement, endurance, willingness, and most of all a cooperative partnership.

Week 1:  Orientation (humans only!)

Weeks 2 – 5:  Class

Week 6:  Graduation

*Option 2 Restrictions – Option 2 of Pre-K9 I, which includes class + separate, optional skill-building sessions, has been set up for those parents who want their puppy to advance socially, and to give them additional means of exercise and more opportunities to apply what they are learning in the class setting. This option must be prepaid in full and no refund will be issued for any unused visits or applying any unused day to future enrichment.
